February 14: Valentine's Day (Saint Valentine's Day, The Feast Of Saint Valentine [Anglican Communion. Lutheran Church]): -- Originating as a Western Christian feast day honoring one or two early saints named Valentinus, Valentine's Day is recognized as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and romantic love in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country. Martyrdom stories associated with various Valentines connected to February 14 are presented in martyrologies, including a written account of Saint Valentine of Rome's imprisonment for performing weddings for soldiers, who were forbidden to marry, and for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment Saint Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his judge, and before his execution he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell. The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). In Europe, Saint Valentine's Keys are given to lovers "as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver's heart", as well as to children, in order to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine's Malady). February 14: National Cream-Filled Chocolate Day: -- Sweet tooths all around the world come together to celebrate delicious cream-filled chocolates on this date every year. It is only natural that one of the best types of chocolates is celebrated on the day for which more chocolates are bought around the world than any other day. In the week of Valentine's Day, over 50 million pounds of chocolate are purchased all around the world. From marshmallow cream and coffee cream to butterscotch, chocolate, and vanilla, cream-filled chocolates have delicious centers that make the chocolates taste even more decadent. It is no wonder that these creamy treats get their own special day. Before cream-filled chocolates became known as truffles, they were called pralines. The Belgian chocolatier, Jean Neuhaus Junior, invented the first hard chocolate shell in 1912, which allowed chocolates to be filled with soft fillings. Neuhaus Jr. was the grandson of a Swiss immigrant, Jean Neuhaus. Neuhaus originally ran an apothecary shop where he covered medicines in chocolate to make them more appealing to customers. It was Neuhaus Jr. who created the very first chocolate-filled bonbons, which he called pralines. However, some other chocolatiers referred to them as truffles because the early varieties were filled with ganache, a glaze made from chocolate and cream. In the U.S., any cream-filled chocolate is referred to today as a truffle. In 2017, Bloomberg Pursuits praised the Neuhaus company for creating "the best chocolate truffle in the world." Chocolates have been a part of life since as early as 1900 B.C. However, back then, it was mainly prepared as a drink. Ancient Mayans enjoyed a drink of chocolate with most meals. Their version of chocolate was thick and frothy, and was sometimes combined with chili peppers and honey. The mighty Aztec ruler, Montezuma II, was said to love chocolate so much that he drank gallons of it every day as an energy booster and aphrodisiac. Chocolate is made from the fruit of the cacao trees called pods. A single pod contains around 40 cacao beans, which can then be dried and roasted to create cocoa beans. These cocoa beans are refined in chocolate factories through winnowing and roasting. The resulting chocolate liquor is blended with sugar and milk and molded into the desired shapes. They were once considered a subspecies of chimpanzees due to their physical and living similarities, but in 1933 they were acknowledged as their own species. Bonobos are only found in the rainforests along the south of the Congo River, are primarily herbivores but will sometimes dine on insects, and consume bats, flying squirrels, and small antelopes on rare occasions. Also known as pygmy chimpanzees, bonobos have been listed as an endangered species and, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, are facing the danger of possible extinction shortly. Started by preservationists, the Bonobo Project seeks to conserve bonobos and take measures to increase their population. The Congo War had adverse effects on the apes as it plunged people into abject poverty, making them look for alternative meat sources. Industrial logging also allowed hunters access to the bonobos' habitat, which was previously only accessible by boat and bush planes. The shrinking bonobo populations can be attributed to poaching, hunting for their meat, and human activities. Contact with humans has also introduced zoonotic diseases such as Ebola to their population, further reducing their numbers in the wild. Currently, bonobos are protected by organizations like the Bonobo Conservation Initiative, the Friends of Bonobo, and Lola ya Bonobo in collaboration with local communities. Sexual activity generally plays a major role in bonobo society, being used as what some scientists perceive as a greeting, a means of forming social bonds, a means of conflict resolution, and postconflict reconciliation. February 14: Library Lovers' Day: -- Today is a day that celebrates love, yes, but it's also Library Lover's Day, dedicated to book lovers across the globe! The day honors libraries and the amazing life-changing books they hold within them. Before you ask why libraries need to be celebrated, digest this fact - there was a time when libraries didn't exist! The word 'library' is actually a Latin word that literally means 'a place that stores books.' Therefore, libraries were simply places appointed by the state to 'stock' books and important manuscripts for the longest time. Library Lovers' Day was initially started in Australia in 2006 by the State Library of New South Wales (NSW). The day became a national holiday in 2007 when the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) joined in on the campaign to promote their passion for books. Though the aim was to raise awareness regarding the services some great libraries offer, the day soon became one that provided solace to those who were 'dateless' on V-Day. Today, Library Lover's Day is celebrated internationally with a new theme every year! For instance, in 2018 Bond University's John & Alison Kearney Library went all out and celebrated the day with a flashy display of a vintage typewriter, pens, and paper. The items were placed so visitors could write love letters to a special someone or their favorite library. February 14: Frederick Douglass Day: -- February 14, 1818 (Observed): #BOTD: #HBD! Frederick Douglass, African American escaped slave, abolitionist, activist, social reformer, orator, writer, and statesman (d. February 20, 1895) is #born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey into slavery on a plantation between Hillsboro and Cordova, Maryland, on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Talbot County; his birthplace was likely his grandmother's cabin east of Tappers Corner, and west of Tuckahoe Creek. In his first autobiography, Douglass stated: "I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it." However, based on the extant records of Douglass's former owner, Aaron Anthony, historian Dickson J. Preston determined that Douglass was born in February 1818. Though the exact date of his birth is unknown, he later chose to celebrate February 14, Valentine's Day, as his birthday, remembering that his mother called him her "Little Valentine". After escaping from slavery in Maryland on February 3, 1838, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, gaining note for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writings. In his time, he was described by abolitionists as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Northerners at the time found it hard to believe that such a great orator had once been a slave. Douglass also actively supported women's suffrage, and held several public offices. Without his approval, Douglass became the first African American nominated for Vice President of the United States as the running mate and Vice Presidential nominee of Victoria Woodhull, on the Equal Rights Party ticket. Douglass was a firm believer in the equality of all peoples, whether black, female, Native American, or recent immigrant. He was also a believer in dialogue and in making alliances across racial and ideological divides, and in the liberal values of the U.S. Constitution. When radical abolitionists, under the motto "No Union With Slaveholders", criticized Douglass' willingness to dialogue with slave owners, he famously replied: "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.". February 14, 1894: #BOTD: #HBD! Jack Benny, American comedian, vaudevillian, radio, television and film actor, and violinist (d. December 26, 1974) is #born Benjamin Kubelsky in Chicago, Illinois. He is recognized as a leading American entertainer of the 20th century, Benny portrayed his character as a miser, playing his violin badly. In character, he would claim to be 39 years of age, regardless of his actual age. Benny was known for comic timing and the ability to cause laughter with a pregnant pause or a single expression, such as his signature exasperated "Well!". His radio and television programs, popular from 1932 until his death in 1974, were a major influence on the sitcom genre. Jack Benny died of pancreatic cancer at his Los Angeles, California home at the age of 80. Benny is interred in a crypt at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California. His will arranged for a single long-stemmed red rose to be delivered to his widow, Mary Livingstone, every day for the rest of her life. Marcel Bigeard (MAHR-SAIL BEE-jzhar), personal radio call-sign "Bruno", French general, recipient of several Legion Of Honor awards, the highest awards given by his country (d. June 18, 2010) is #born in Toul, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France. Marcel Bigeard was a French military officer who fought in World War II, Indochina and Algeria. He was one of the commanders in the Battle of Dien Bien Phu and is thought by many to have been a dominating influence on French 'unconventional' warfare thinking from that time onwards. He was one of the most decorated soldiers in France, and is particularly noteworthy because of his ascendance from a regular soldier in 1936 to ultimately finishing his career in 1976 as a Lieutenant General. A former resistant, he is associated mainly with the war of Indochina and Algeria. Marcel Bigeard famously quipped to his troops during the final days of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu that though the battle may indeed have been terrible, despite this, in all his long military career, that none of the battles he had been through were as awful as his mother. Marcel Bigeard died at his home in Toul, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France, the commune where he was born, aged 94. His funeral procession was held at the Cathedrale Saint-Etienne de Toul on June 21, in presence of former French president Valery Giscard d'Estaing and Minister of Defense Herve Morin. Full military honours were accorded to Bigeard on June 22 at Les Invalides by the country's prime minister, Francois Fillon. In an obituary, the American historian Max Boot wrote that Bigeard's life disproved the popular canard in the English-speaking world that the French are soft and cowardly soldiers, the so-called "cheese-eating surrender monkeys", writing that Bigeard was the "consummate warrior" and one of "the great soldiers of the 20th century". February 14, 1939: Naval History: The History Of The Kriegsmarine: Naval Launches: Battleships: The German Battleship Bismarck: -- The German battleship Bismarck is launched, the first of two Bismarck class battleships built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. Named after Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck, the ship was laid down at the Blohm and Voss shipyard in Hamburg in July 1936 and launched in February 1939. Work was completed in August 1940, when she was commissioned into the German fleet. Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz were the largest battleships ever built by Germany, and two of the largest built by any European power. On May 27, 1941, German battleship Bismarck is sunk in the North Atlantic killing almost 2,100 men. During the Battle Of The Denmark Strait two days prior, the iconic battlecruiser HMS Hood initially engaged Prinz Eugen, probably by mistake, while HMS Prince Of Wales engaged Bismarck. In the ensuing battle Hood was destroyed by the combined fire of Bismarck and Prinz Eugen, who then damaged Prince Of Wales and forced her retreat. Bismarck suffered sufficient damage from three hits to force an end to the raiding mission. The destruction of Hood spurred a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy involving dozens of warships. Two days later, heading for occupied France to effect repairs, Bismarck was attacked by 16 obsolescent Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal; one scored a hit that rendered the battleship's steering gear inoperable. In her final battle the following morning, the already-crippled Bismarck was severely damaged during a sustained engagement with two British battleships and two heavy cruisers, was scuttled by her crew, and sank with heavy loss of life. Most experts agree that the battle damage would have caused her to sink eventually. The wreck was located in June 1989 by Robert Ballard, and has since been further surveyed by several other expeditions. February 14, 1946: #BOTD: #HBD! Gregory Hines, African American actor, dancer, and choreographer, recipient of the Tony, Drama Desk and Emmy awards (d. August 9, 2003) is #born in New York City, the son of Alma Iola (Lawless) and Maurice Robert Hines, a dancer, musician, and actor. Hines began tapping when he was two years old, and began dancing semi professionally at the age of five. After that, he and his older brother Maurice performed together, studying with choreographer Henry LeTang. Gregory and Maurice also learned from veteran tap dancers, such as Howard Sims and The Nicholas Brothers, whenever they performed in the same venues. The two brothers were known as "The Hines Kids", making nightclub appearances, and later as "The Hines Brothers". When their father joined the act as a drummer, the name changed again in 1963 to "Hines, Hines, and Dad". Hines made his movie debut in Mel Brooks's History of the World, Part I. Critics took note of Hines's comedic charm, and he later appeared in such movies as The Cotton Club, White Nights, Running Scared alongside Billy Crystal, Tap, and Waiting to Exhale. On television, he starred in his own series in 1997 called The Gregory Hines Show on CBS, as well as in the recurring role of Ben Doucette on Will and Grace. In 1999, he would return to voice Big Bill, in Nick Jr.'s television show Little Bill. In 2000, he starred in The Tic Code. Hines made his Broadway debut with his brother in The Girl in Pink Tights in 1954. He earned Tony Award nominations for Eubie! (1979), Comin' Uptown (1980), and Sophisticated Ladies (1981), and won the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Jelly's Last Jam (1992) and the Theatre World Award for Eubie!. In 1989, Gregory Hines created "Gregory Hines' Tap Dance in America," which he also hosted. The PBS special featured seasoned tap dancers such as Savion Glover and Bunny Briggs. He also co hosted the Tony Awards ceremony in 1995 and 2002. In 1990, Hines visited his idol, Sammy Davis, Jr., as he was dying of throat cancer, unable to speak. After Davis died, an emotional Hines spoke at Davis's funeral of how Sammy had made a gesture to him, "as if passing a basketball _ and I caught it." Hines spoke of the honor that Sammy thought that Hines could carry on from where he left off. Hines was an avid improviser. He did a lot of improvisation of tap steps, tap sounds, and tap rhythms alike. His improvisation was like that of a drummer, doing a solo and coming up with all sorts of rhythms. He also improvised the phrasing of a number of tap steps that he would come up with, mainly based on sound produced. A laid back dancer, he usually wore nice pants and a loose fitting shirt. Although he inherited the roots and tradition of the black rhythmic tap, he also influenced the new black rhythmic tap, as a proponent. "'He purposely obliterated the tempos,' wrote tap historian Sally Sommer, 'throwing down a cascade of taps like pebbles tossed across the floor. In that moment, he aligned tap with the latest free form experiments in jazz and new music and postmodern dance.'" Throughout his career, Hines wanted and continued to be an advocate for tap in America. In 1988, he successfully petitioned the creation of National Tap Dance Day, which is now celebrated in 40 cities in the United States. It is also celebrated in eight other nations. Gregory Hines was on the board of directors of Manhattan Tap, he was a member of the Jazz Tap Ensemble, and a member of the American Tap Foundation (formerly the American Tap Dance Orchestra). He was a good teacher, influencing tap dance artists Savion Glover, Dianne Walker, Ted Levy, and Jane Goldberg. In an interview with The New York Times in 1988, Hines said that everything he did was influenced by his dancing: "my singing, my acting, my lovemaking, my being a parent." Hines' marriages to Patricia Panella and Pamela Koslow ended in divorce. He had two children - a son, Zach, and a daughter, Daria, as well as a stepdaughter, Jessica Koslow, and a grandson. Gregory Hines died of liver cancer en route to the hospital from his home in Los Angeles, California, aged 57 He had been diagnosed with the disease more than a year earlier, but had informed only his closest friends. It is a philosophy of personal contentment. Cagen believed that Valentine's Day had become too commercialized, producing a watered-down version of romance that made people feel excluded. This was why she created Quirkyalone Day - a day of romance that leaves no one out. Sasha got the idea for the day when she was at a New Year's Eve party and could not find anyone with whom to fulfill the new year's kissing tradition. When she realized she wasn't the only one, she had an epiphany. International Quirkyalone Day celebrates true romance - the kind that doesn't need coupling to be complete. It shows that there are different types of love that we often ignore in our quest for finding an "other half." The day preaches that there is no special "other half." Rather, people are whole on their own. This way, romance is not about two incomplete souls wandering through life with the end goal of finding each other. Rather, it is about one fully whole person who finds other fully whole people that they can celebrate life with. The massive wheel is 550 feet tall and is found in Las Vegas! While February 14 is more famous for being Valentine's Day, it also doubles as the annual observance of National Ferris Wheel Day. George Washington Gale Ferris Jr., the inventor of the Ferris wheel, was born on February 14, 1859. Ferris, a civil engineer, was born in Galesburg, Illinois. He introduced the world to the concept of the Ferris wheel and designed the original Chicago Ferris Wheel. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, in 1881. Ferris constructed his prototype as a landmark for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, as the United States' version of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Originally called "the Chicago Wheel," it took Ferris two years to plan and construct. Costing about $700,000 in 1893 and containing over 100,000 parts, Ferris' massive wheel stood at an enormous 264 feet high, towering about 26 stories above Chicago. It had 36 gondolas (cars housed within glass and locked doors) and accommodated up to 60 (40 seated, 20 standing) passengers. Over 1.4 million people paid 50 cents for a 20-minute ride on the wheel through the next 19 weeks of the World's Columbian Exposition. After the exhibition, the Ferris wheel was moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1904 for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, and destroyed there on May 11, 1906, with dynamite for scrap metal. Some dismantled parts of Ferris' original design were used to make the U.S.S. Illinois, a World War I battleship, and to construct a bridge over the Kankakee River, south of Chicago. February 14, 1891: #DOTD: #RIP: William Tecumseh Sherman, American soldier, businessman, educator, and author (b. February 8, 1820) #dies of pneumonia in New York City at 1:50 PM, six days after his 71st birthday.] President Benjamin Harrison, who served under Sherman, sent a telegram to Sherman's family and ordered all national flags to be flown at half staff. On February 19, a funeral service was held at his home, followed by a military procession. Joseph E. Johnston, the Confederate officer who had commanded the resistance to Sherman's troops in Georgia and the Carolinas, served as a pallbearer in New York City. It was a bitterly cold day and a friend of Johnston, fearing that the general might become ill, asked him to put on his hat. Johnston replied: "If I were in [Sherman's] place, and he were standing in mine, he would not put on his hat." Johnston did catch a serious cold and died one month later of pneumonia. Sherman's body was then transported to St. Louis, where another service was conducted at a local Catholic church on February 21, 1891. His son, Thomas Ewing Sherman, who was a Jesuit priest, presided over his father's funeral masses in New York City and in St. Louis. Former U.S. president and Civil War veteran Rutherford B. Hayes, who attended both ceremonies, said at the time that Sherman had been "the most interesting and original character in the world." He is buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. William Tecumseh Sherman was #born in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. He served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, for which he received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the "scorched earth" policies he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States. Sherman began his Civil War career serving in the First Battle Of Bull Run and Kentucky in 1861. He served under General Ulysses S. Grant in 1862 and 1863 during the battles of forts Henry and Donelson, the Battle Of Shiloh, the campaigns that led to the fall of the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River, and the Chattanooga Campaign, which culminated with the routing of the Confederate armies in the state of Tennessee. In 1864, Sherman succeeded Grant as the Union commander in the western theater of the war. He proceeded to lead his troops to the capture of the city of Atlanta, a military success that contributed to the re-election of Abraham Lincoln. Sherman's subsequent march through Georgia and the Carolinas further undermined the Confederacy's ability to continue fighting. He accepted the surrender of all the Confederate armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida in April 1865, after having been present at most major military engagements in the western theater. When Grant assumed the U.S. presidency in 1869, Sherman succeeded him as Commanding General of the Army, in which capacity he served from 1869 until 1883. As such, he was responsible for the U.S. Army's engagement in the Indian Wars over the next 15 years. Sherman advocated total war against hostile Indians to force them back onto their reservations. He steadfastly refused to be drawn into politics and in 1875 published his Memoirs, one of the best-known first-hand accounts of the Civil War. British military historian B. H. His first story, "The Curfew Tolls", was published in the magazine Astounding Science Fiction during 1950, and his first novel, World Out of Mind, was published during 1953. Along with John Mather and Edith Dell, he is credited for the screenplay for the colour feature movie Satellite in the Sky (1956). He did not publish any work after 1980. In 2010, the National Library of Scotland purchased his literary papers and correspondence. J. T. McIntosh died in an undisclosed location of undisclosed causes, aged 83. John Ehrlichman was born John Daniel Ehrlichman in Tacoma, Washington, the son of Lillian Catherine (nee Danielson) and Rudolph Irwin Ehrlichman into a family that practiced Christian Science after his conversion from Judaism. During World War II, Ehrlichman received the Distinguished Flying Cross as a lead B-24 navigator in the Eighth Air Force. John Daniel Ehrlichman was counsel and Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs under President Richard Nixon. Ehrlichman was an important influence on Nixon's domestic policy, coaching him on issues and enlisting his support for environmental initiatives. He was a key figure in events leading to the Watergate break-in and the ensuing Watergate scandal, for which he was convicted of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and perjury. In his later years he wrote political novels under his own name and science fiction novels under pseudonyms. John Ehrlichman died In 2016, a quote from Ehrlichman was the lead-in for the April 2016 anti-drug war article "Legalize It All: How To Win The War On Drugs" in Harper's Magazine by journalist Dan Baum: "You want to know what this was really all about?" he asked with the bluntness of a man who, after public disgrace and a stretch in federal prison, had little left to protect. Earle Doud penned jokes for such television comics as Johnny Carson, Jack Paar, and Jonathan Winters and for the popular television series Father Knows Best in the 1950s and early '60s. His debut album, Sounds Funny, took a humorous look at sound effects. Doud's most successful outing was an album, The First Family, recorded on October 27, 1962, that poked fun at President John F. Kennedy's White House. Written and produced with Bob Booker and featuring Vaughn Meader as the President and Naomi Brossart as the First Lady, it was a phenomenal success, selling more than seven and a half million copies. Although a second volume, released in the spring of 1963, received an equally warm reception, it was pulled from the marketplace following Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963. The American presidency continued to be a source for Doud's humor, as he subsequently wrote and produced similar albums Lyndon Johnson's Lonely Hearts Club Band with Alen Robin in 1967 and The First Family Rides Again, which spoofed the Ronald Reagan era, in 1981. He also produced the albums Spiro T. Agnew Is a Riot, parodying Nixon's vice president in 1971, and Henry The First, featuring Kenneth Mars doing an uncanny Henry Kissinger impression in 1974. On February 25, the last night of the meeting, Premier Nikita Khrushchev condemns Joseph Stalin's crimes in the "Secret Speech" officially entitles "On The Cult Of Personality And Its Consequences". It was sharply critical particularly with respect to the purges which had especially marked the last years of the 1930s. Khrushchev charged Stalin with having fostered a leadership cult of personality despite ostensibly maintaining support for the ideals of communism. The speech was leaked to the west by the Israeli intelligence agency, the Mossad, which received it from the Polish journalist Viktor Grievsky.The speech was shocking in its day. There are reports that the audience reacted with applause and laughter at several points. There are also reports that some of those present suffered heart attacks and others later committed suicide due to shock at the revelations of Stalin's use of terror. The ensuing confusion among many Soviet citizens, bred on the panegyrics and permanent praise of the "genius" of Stalin, was especially apparent in Georgia, Stalin's homeland, where the days of protests and rioting ended with the Soviet army crackdown on March 9, 1956. The speech was a major cause of the Sino-Soviet split in which China (under Chairman Mao Zedong) and Albania (under First Secretary Enver Hoxha) condemned Khrushchev as a revisionist. In response, they formed the anti-revisionist movement, criticizing the post-Stalin leadership of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union for allegedly deviating from the path of Lenin and Stalin. The speech was a milestone in the Khrushchev Thaw. Buddy Knox was born Buddy Wayne Knox in the tiny farming community of Happy, Texas. He learned to play the guitar in his youth, and in his teens, some high-school friends and he formed a band called the "Rhythm Orchids". After they performed on the same 1956 radio show as fellow Texan Roy Orbison and his "Teen Kings" band, Orbison suggested that Knox go to record producer Norman Petty, who had a recording studio in Clovis, New Mexico, the same studio where Buddy Holly recorded several of his early hits, including "That'll Be the Day". Knox's song "Party Doll" was released on the Roulette record label, and went to number one on the Cash Box record chart in 1957 (after being picked from the tiny Triple-D label). It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA. This success was followed by "Rock Your Little Baby To Sleep", a number-17 hit, and "Hula Love", a number-9 hit. While he never achieved the same level of artistic success as Holly or Orbison, Knox outlived both and enjoyed a long career in music. His remains were cremated; the final disposition of his ashes are not known other than that they were given to his family. Sandy Nelson was born Sander Lloyd Nelson in Santa Monica, California. He had several solo instrumental Top 40 hits, and was a session drummer on many other well-known hits, and released over 30 albums. His first recording, with a band called the Renegades (Richard Podolor, Bruce Johnston, and Nick Venet), was "Geronimo", written by Venet, produced by Kim Fowley, and released on the Original Sound Records label. Although it flopped on the national charts, it charted in some of the Mid West markets. The song, along with "Charge", is part of the soundtrack of 1959 film Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow released by American International Pictures. Nelson attended high school with Jan Berry, Dean Torrence (who became Jan and Dean), and Kim Fowley. After gaining respect as a session drummer, he played on such songs as "To Know Him Is To Love Him" (Phil Spector's Teddy Bears, 1958), "Alley-Oop" (The Hollywood Argyles, 1960), and "A Thousand Stars" (Kathy Young and the Innocents, 1960). His song "Teen Beat", on Original Sound Records, rose to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Subsequently, he signed with the Imperial record label, and pounded out two more Top 40 hits, "Let There Be Drums", which went to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Drums Are My Beat". In December 1961, the British music magazine, NME, reported that "Let There Be Drums" had gone Top 10 in both the United Kingdom and United States. All three were instrumentals (a feat rarely repeated). Guitar playing on these hits was by co-writer Richard Podolor, later a songwriter and record producer. Near the end of 1963, Nelson was in a motorcycle accident. The injuries necessitated amputation of his right foot and part of that leg. Nonetheless, Nelson continued to record into the early 1970s, releasing two or three albums a year, consisting of cover versions of popular hits plus a few original compositions. Jose Ferrer, who performed with Platt in the Broadway play The Shrike, helped Platt land his first film role in the 1955 film version. John Barryonemore was a member of the Drew and Barrymore theatrical families, he initially tried to avoid the stage, and briefly attempted a career as an artist, but appeared on stage together with his father Maurice in 1900, and then his sister Ethel the following year. He began his career in 1903 and first gained attention as a stage actor in light comedy, then high drama, culminating in productions of Justice (1916), Richard III (1920) and Hamlet (1922); his portrayal of Hamlet led to him being called the "greatest living American tragedian". After a success as Hamlet in London in 1925, Barrymore left the stage for 14 years and instead focused entirely on films. In the silent film era, he was well received in such pictures as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), Sherlock Holmes (1922) and The Sea Beast (1926). During this period, he gained his nickname, the Great Profile. His stage-trained voice proved an asset when sound films were introduced, and three of his works, Grand Hotel (1932), Twentieth Century (1934) and Midnight (1939) have been inducted into the National Film Registry. Barrymore's personal life has been the subject of much attention before and since his death. He struggled with alcohol abuse from the age of 14, was married and divorced four times, and declared bankruptcy later in life. Much of his later work involved self-parody and the portrayal of drunken has-beens. His obituary in The Washington Post observed that "with the passing of the years - and as his private life became more public - he became, despite his genius in the theater, a tabloid character." Although film historians have opined that Barrymore's "contribution to the art of cinematic acting began to fade" after the mid-1930s, Barrymore's biographer, Martin Norden, considers him to be "perhaps the most influential and idolized actor of his day". John Barrymore died at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital of cirrhosis of the liver and kidney failure, complicated by pneumonia, aged 60. Hoffa was a union activist from a young age and an important regional figure with the IBT by his mid-20s. By 1952 he had risen to national vice-president of the IBT, and served as the union's general president between 1958 and 1971. He secured the first national agreement for teamsters' rates in 1964 with the National Master Freight Agreement. He played a major role in the growth and development of the union, which eventually became the largest (by membership) in the United States with over 2.3 million members at its peak, during his terms as its leader. Hoffa became involved with organized crime from the early years of his Teamsters work, and this connection continued until his disappearance on July 30, 1975, when he was last seen outside the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Hills near Detroit, Michigan. He was convicted of jury tampering, attempted bribery, and fraud in 1964, in two separate trials. He was imprisoned in 1967 and sentenced to 13 years. In mid-1971, he resigned as president of the union as part of a pardon agreement with President Richard Nixon; he was released later that year, though barred from union activities until 1980. Hoffa, hoping to regain support and to return to IBT leadership, unsuccessfully attempted to overturn this order. He was appointed director of the Egyptian Museum in Florence, where he professionally reorganized the collection in new quarters in 1880, then at the peak of his career was made director of the Museo Egizio di Torino, which became with him and his many seasons of excavating, the second biggest Egyptian museum in the world. February 14: League Of Women Voters Day: -- February 14, 1920: The League Of Women Voters is created through a merger of two organizations: the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) and the National Council of Women Voters (N.C.W.V.).The League Of Women Voters is one of the most powerful voices in the women's suffrage movement and voters' rights advocacy in the United States. On League Of Women Voters Day, we celebrate the impact and achievements of the League of Women Voters, which has existed for more than 100 years. Although it was initially created to campaign for women's suffrage, educate women about the election process, and lobby for legislation affecting women, the League Of Women Voters has had a tremendous impact in increasing overall voter access and education for women in the United States. No discussion of the political history of the United States can be complete without mentioning League of Women Voters Day. In 1909, the woman popularly known as 'the mother of women's suffrage,' Emma Smith DeVoe, proposed that a separate organization be created from NAWSA to educate women on the election process and create awareness about women's issues. Her proposal was ignored, and in 1911, she created the National Council of Women Voters. Carrie Chapman Catt, the president of the NAWSA at the time, was worried that some of DeVoe's ideas might discourage conservative women from joining the movement, and so she proposed a merger of the two organizations. At the 1919 NAWSA convention, a motion was made towards this end, and by January 6, 1920, the merger was complete. At first, the National League of Women Voters only operated as a committee of NAWSA, but that changed after a formal organization of the league was drafted at the 1920 NAWSA convention. The group was one of the first to receive status as an N.G.O. with the United Nations. The league used to be exclusively for women, but men were allowed to join in 1973 when the league's charter was modified. Over the years, the league has worked to expand voter access, educate voters, and fight voter suppression. They run VOTE411.org, a bilingual website that gives voters information about elections and candidates tailored to their location. As of 2024, the league has over 500,000 members and supporters with over 700 state and local leagues across the United States.
